He began his career in 1980, at KPMG, in the Audit and Consulting Department. From 1985 to 1990, at Citibank Portugal, he was Financial Controller, Treasurer and Head of Financial Markets. From 1990 to 1992, he was Advisor to the Board of Directors (CA) of BFB Leasing and Secretary General of BFB. From 1993 to 1997, he was a member of the Board of Deutsche Bank Portugal. From 1997 to 2004, Member of the Executive Committee (EC) of BCI. From 1997 to 2006, member of the EC and the Board of Banco Santander de Negócios Portugal. From 2000 to 2004, he is a member of the Board of Crédito Predial Português and of Banco Totta & Açores. He held the positions of Vice-President of the EC of Crédito Predial Português and Banco Totta & Açores. From 2005 to 2006, he was Vice-President of the EC and member of the Board of Directors of Banco Santander Totta. From 2006 to 2012, General Manager and Member of the Management Committee of Banco Santander Central Hispano, Vice-Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the EC of Banco Santander Totta. He also held the position of Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Banco Comercial Português, S.A., from 2012 to 2018, having been reappointed and elected Chairman of the Board of Directors for the current term of office 2018-2021.

He also holds the positions of Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Fundação Millennium bcp, Vice-Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bank Millennium, S.A. (Poland), member of the Advisory Board of the Forum for Competitiveness and member of the Board of Business Roundtable Portugal. He is 1st Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of BIM – Banco Internacional de Moçambique, S.A. having been reappointed on 24 March 2021 for the current term.

He began his professional career as an equity analyst in the construction and banking sectors at Banco Santander de Negócios (1990-1994), for the following 6 years he worked at Banco Mello de Investimentos as Coordinator of Equity Research (1994 - 1995) and Director of the of Equity Derivatives respectively (1996 -2000). From 2000 to 2006 he was Director of Capital Markets (derivatives) at Banco Comercial Português de Investimento, and from 2006 to 2010 he was CFO and CEO at Banco Millennium Turkey. He has been, since 2010, Millennium Bim's CFO, having assumed, over this time, different responsibilities over time, such as Marketing, Corporate Centre, Accounting, Heritage and Works, among others. He is also a non-executive member of the Board of Directors of SIM (Insuradora Internacional de Moçambique).

At Oxfam GB he held the position of Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for the development program in Niassa (2002 - 2004) and was later appointed General Coordinator of the Oxfam GB Program in Niassa (2004 - 2005). From 2005 to 2007 at CUSO Mozambique, he was Program Assistant, where he provided direct advice to the Country Representative in the entire National Program, in the components of institutional capacity building, microfinance and social programs.
